Gynaecologist warns against unsafe abortion

A consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Dr. Mohammed Garba, has warned women against engaging in unsafe abortion. The gynaecologist noted that the increasing incidence of unsafe abortion in the country is linked to high cases of maternal mortality. Unsafe abortions, he said, are most times caused by unplanned pregnancies, adding that the current laws on abortion in the country are also not helping the efforts to curb the problem.

The gynaecologist noted that the increasing incidence of unsafe abortion in the country is linked to high cases of maternal mortality. Unsafe abortions, he said, are most times caused by unplanned pregnancies, adding that the current laws on abortion in the country are also not helping the efforts to curb the problem.

The President, Federation of African Nutrition Societies, Prof. Ngozi Nnam, has cautioned pregnant women against joking with their diet, especially during the first trimester of pregnancy. According to the nutritionist, poor nutrition, particularly during the first trimester of pregnancy often leads to the poor brain development of babies. Nnam, a professor of Community and Public Health Nutrition at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, stressed that proper diet in pregnancy was crucial to ensuring optimal development of the foetus.

An oncologist at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, Dr. Victor Isibor says having multiple sexual partners, engaging in dangerous sexual activity, smoking, sedentary lifestyles are risk factors for cancers. Dr. Isibor said this on Monday while speaking at the Health Response and Wellness webinar organised by the PUNCH Newspaper. According to him, early detection of cancer increases the chance of survival.

A Consultant Clinical Pharmacist, Dr. Bisi Bright has cautioned men against using aphrodisiac without consulting physicians, noting that it could cause other health complications. The health expert stated this on Monday at a Webinar organised by PUNCH Nigeria Limited, stressing that aphrodisiac does not have any impact on fertility. Bright, who is the CEO of Live Well Initiate, a Non-Profit Public Health Organisation, urged men that wish to use aphrodisiac for sexual pleasure to first consult a physician.

A professor of medicine, Kamilu Karaye, has cautioned Nigerians against prolonged emotional stress, noting that it can cause a heart attack. Karaye, who is a cardiologist, noted that unknown to many people, prolonged emotional stress has a grave impact on heart health. Speaking with PUNCH HealthWise in an interview, Karaye noted that any emotional stress that goes on for a long time can affect heart health even if the person has a healthy heart.

A consultant physician and dermatologist at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Dr. Folakemi Cole-Adeife says Triple action creams prolong infections and give a false sense of solution to skin problems. Dr. Cole-Adeife noted that the creams are not required in most cases, adding that they are also harmful, especially for children.

Gynaecologists and obstetricians say there is no safe time during pregnancy for a woman to drink alcohol, warning that alcohol can cause developmental problems to the foetus throughout pregnancy. The maternal health experts noted that drinking alcohol during pregnancy is dangerous even for women trying to conceive.

A professor of physiotherapy, Rufus Adedoyin, has warned that adopting a bad sitting posture over a period of three years can cause serious back pain. Adedoyin, who is the dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences at Obafemi Awolowo University, also said that cooking, sweeping in certain positions can also cause back pain.
